Althea McNish

Althea McNish was one of the first women of West Indian heritage to gain recognition in her field of Textile design. Having been born in Trinidad and Tobago, McNish came to the UK in 1951, bringing with her an artistic drive. Before studying and the RCA, she attended the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts then the Central School of Art and Design.

McNish is recognised for producing vibrant, colourful prints that stood out against other post-war Britain’s dreary designs. She produced work for Liberty’s of London, Heal’s, Hull Traders, Dior, Balenciaga and royalty, having made a design for Queen Elizabeth’s 1966 visit to Trinidad.
