Rosie Lee Tompkins (Effie Mae Martin Howard)

Tompkins combined the finest materials chosen for their textures and light-reflecting qualities with distressed T-shirts and hand-painted portraits.

Born Effie Mae Martin in rural Gould, Arkansas, on Sept. 9, 1936, she worked with the convention of the quilt block but with a tremendous variety of scale and a sculptural hand to create distorted forms. One of the greatest American quilt-makers, a master of bold, vivid colours, her craft featured portraits of the Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King Jr., Magic Johnson, and other American Civil Rights activists.
